Emergency Preparedness, Interoperability and School Safety Grants for Schools

Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools - Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Grants (REMS Grants)

Total Funding Available in FY 2009: $26,000,000.

Purpose: This grant program supports efforts by LEAs to create, strengthen, and improve emergency management plans at the district and school-building levels, including training school personnel on emergency management procedures; communicating with parents about emergency plans and procedures; and coordinating with local law enforcement, public safety or emergency management, public health, and mental health agencies and local government

Eligible Applicants: Local educational agencies. Private schools are not directly eligible but may participate through a public educational agency.

Emergency Management for Higher Education Grants (EMHE Grants)

Total Funding Available in FY 2009: Not Yet Announced

Purpose: This grant program is designed to fund higher education institution projects to develop, or review and improve, and fully integrate all-hazards campus-based emergency management planning efforts. A program funded under this absolute priority is required to use the framework of the four phases of emergency management

Eligible Applicants: Public and not-for-profit colleges, universities, and other higher education institutions.

COPS Secure Our Schools (SOS) Grant Program

Total Funding Available in FY 2009: $16,000,000

Purpose: This grant program provides funding to local governments to assist with the development of school safety resources. Grant recipients will be able to establish and enhance a variety of school safety equipment and/or programs in order to promote the development of school safety efforts within their communities. Funding will be used to help cover the cost of security measures such as the placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures; security assessments; security training of personnel and students; coordination with local law enforcement; and other measures that could significantly increase a school's security. Grantees are required to contribute a local cash match of 50 percent toward the total cost of the approved grant project during the two year grant award period. All local, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies that have primary law enforcement authority within a partner primary or secondary school are eligible to apply.

Eligible Applicants: Local schools in coordination with law enforcement agency.
